Artist Bio

My name is Brentaja Hyatt, also known as LaGolden Artist. I'm a self-taught Black abstract and surrealist artist originally from New Mexico and now based in San Antonio, Texas. I've been creating art for over 20 years, and every piece I make is inspired by my life experiences, identity, and the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds.

I launched LaGoldenArtist Gallery in May 2019 to share my artwork with people who connect with my vision. Since then, my work has been featured in RAW Artists exhibitions in 2018 and 2019, as well as the Pancakes & Booze Art Show in 2023. I've collaborated with fellow artists and creatives, completed numerous commissioned pieces, and sold original artwork to collectors across the United States.

My art is deeply personal. I often use my own features and Afrocentric characteristics as inspiration, creating pieces that celebrate identity while encouraging viewers to look beyond what they first see. My goal is to challenge the way people experience art, spark conversation, and inspire others to see beauty, emotion, and meaning from a different perspective.

Artist Statement

Art has always been more than just a creative outlet for me. It's how I express myself, process my experiences and emotions, and tell stories that words can't always explain. As a Black abstract and surrealist artist, I create work that blends reality with imagination, allowing emotion, symbolism, and personal experiences to come together on the canvas.

A lot of my inspiration comes from my own life, both physically and spiritually. I often incorporate my own features and Afrocentric characteristics into my work to celebrate identity, culture, and the beauty within my community. Every piece I create reflects a part of my journey, whether it's growth, challenges, healing, faith, or self-discovery.

I create art that encourages people to slow down, look beyond the surface, and connect with a piece in their own way. I hope my work challenges how people view art and reminds them that there isn't just one way to interpret it. If someone walks away seeing my work or even themselves from a different perspective, then I've done what I set out to do.
